The present study directly compared the acute effects of mescaline, LSD, and psilocybin within the same healthy participants. Contemporary research has mostly focused on investigating a single psychedelic substance. Comparisons of serotonergic psychedelics are lacking, except for one recently published study that directly compared LSD and psilocybin [24]. Given the renewed interest in psychedelic substances, systematic comparisons of their acute subjective effects, autonomic effects, and pharmacokinetics are crucial. The present study was the first to compare three classic psychedelics with a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject design and the first to establish equivalent doses. This article attempted to fully review pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of mescaline, focusing in its potential therapeutic application, as hallucinogens appear to present favorable toxicological profiles for this purpose.

Data analysis
The Trichocereus peruvianus and the Trichocereus bridgesii, both commonly known as wachuma, are used, though less frequently in comparison to Lophophora williamsii and Trichocereus pachanoi. Another cactus that contains mescaline, Pelecyphora aselliformis, is referred to as peyotillo by the Native Americans, or “little peyote”, as it is smaller than regular peyote cactus. Peyotillo does not contain as much mescaline as peyote, and Native Americans use it in folk medicine [37]. Lophophora williamsii is the most important representative; in English it is known as peyote (i.e., Spanish loanword), being mainly originated from the highlands of middle Mexico and southern Texas in North America. Neither the liquor nor the bean contains the psychedelic chemical mescaline. “We don’t want to go shorter,” declares Gül Dölen, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Potential medical usage
The quinone metabolite may be difficult to isolate since this class is known to bind readily to protein via conjugate addition by thiol or amino nucleophiles. Subsequent oxidation can regenerate the quinone which would then redox cycle at the active site. Though not considered addictive, mescaline may still pose other health risks if abused. There are no published reports of fetal outcome following use in human pregnancy. Suicidal ideation and systemic effects including rhabdomyolysis in severe cases have been reported with mescaline use in nonpregnant patients. PEYOTE COMPOSITION
One British surrealist painter of the 1930s, Julian Trevelyan, found ingestion inspiring; another, Basil Beaumont, experienced “excruciating pain and fear”. French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre entered a grotesque hell, whereas British writer Aldous Huxley tripped into a magnificent world of expanded consciousness, described in his influential 1954 book The Doors of Perception. In the early and mid-twentieth century, it seemed more than plausible that the fashionable hallucinogen could be tamed into a therapeutic agent. After all, it had profound effects on the human body, and had been used for centuries in parts of the Americas as a gateway to ceremonial spiritual experience.
Accordingly, LSD is approximately 2,000 times more potent than mescaline in producing an altered state of consciousness [67]. Usually, the effects appear within 30 minutes per os, the psychedelic peak effect occurs after 2 hours and disappears after hours [43, 68, 69]. The peak of the effects does not co-occur with the mescaline concentration peak in the brain, suggesting that mescaline undergoes bioactivation in order to produce the maximum effect.
Because of poor lipid solubility, mescaline does not easily pass the blood–brain barrier [31]. There are some reports of intoxications caused by hallucinogens requiring emergency management, including fatalities, but the information available on these cases is very limited [99]. Several other start-ups are going ahead with trials to study mescaline treatments for mental-health conditions. Journey Colab will launch an ascending-dose study in the next year for alcohol misuse, conducted by the Centre for Human Drug Research in Leiden, the Netherlands. Mescaline has an empathogenic aspect that will aid in addiction therapy by boosting connections between patients and the care team and other people recovering from addiction, Chowdhury argues. Finally, although we have compared mescaline experiences by mescaline type of use inthe present study, we do not intend for these data to be interpreted to mean thatfurther rigorous, clinical research are not needed.
